I thought I would share a quick countdown of 5 things that I have learned since working as a police officer at school.

K-9 Officer

5)  That I am an old head and need to go back to school to learn the law.

4) That I can not walk up to you and ask you for your name or any identification.

3) That you have absolute authority to tell me to mind my own business, that you can do what you want and say what you want.

2) That I can not put my hands on you. (This makes it difficult to arrest you)

Drum roll now for the number one thing that I have now been made aware of in the last two years*@*@*@*@*@*@*@*@*@*@*@*@* and…..

1) That I know absolutely nothing! Though I have been a police officer for almost 28 years now, I do not know a single thing.

I hope that you have now been enlightened as I have been with this quick list of knowledge. I am constantly reminded of these facts and am attempting to adjust to this new state of enlightenment and be content with this new responsibility that I am aware of. If it a heavy burden but I thought if I shared these with you, that you could help me by checking up on me and keeping me accountable. After all, the mind is a terrible thing and someone has to stop it before it hurts somebody.

What things have you learned in your work or life experiences as of late? Please share so that we can all help each other live up to what we are expected to do. Thanks for sharing.

Who are you acquiring this knowledge from?

  2. Gayle Coleman says:

When you are on campus how do you respond to these kids when they say these things to you? Do you respond in the same way you would out on the street? Are you being restricted in any way? Just wondering.
In the classroom teachers are being restricted, especially in special ed.

    • Bryan Sr says:

I think I respond in the same manner that I did when I was with HPD. That may be the reason for doing so. I realize that I have the same authority I did then. I just work for a different agency.
I do not think there are any restrictions on us for the most part, They don’t want us going out looking for stuff away from the schools that is.
Regarding S.E., we just need to be careful as we are aware of the difference in mental culpability.
      Great questions, thanks.

Isn’t that funny…they tell me the same thing and I have only been an officer for 18 years.
