The trial continues against the parents of Shafilea Ahmed’s parents, Iftikhar and Farzana Ahmed. Shafilea Ahmed disappeared on September 11, 2003. She was missing for a week before her teachers reported to the police the fact that she had been missing.
Shafilea Ahmed’s decomposed remains were found in February 2004, in the River Kent near Sedgwick, Cumbria after a heavy flood had washed her body from its resting place in the river.
Shafilea Ahmed was 17 years old when she was murdered. She is said to have turned down a suitor in an arranged marriage in 2003, prior to her “disappearance”.
In January 2008, the third coroner’s inquest held that Shafilea Ahmed was the victim of a “very vile murder”. The parents, Iftikhar and Farzana Ahmed were charged with their daughter’s murder on September 7, 2011, almost 8 years after her disappearance.
During the murder trial, a friend of Alesha Ahmed, Shafilea’s sister, testified that Alesha told her that her father stabbed her sister’s body into pieces.
Alesha Ahmed testified that she witnessed her father push Shafilea down on to the settee and had forced a plastic bag down Shafilea’s mouth and suffocated her while her mother stood by and stated “just finish it here”, also while their other children watched.
The trial against Iftikhar and Farzana Ahmed for the murder of their daughter, Shafilea Ahmed began in May 2012, and continues at this time.
The honor killing of Shafilea Ahmed occurred 9 years ago, her parents were not charged for this murder for almost 8 years. The trial for her murder is just now taking place. There is no honor in honor killing. It is murder. How a parent could kill their child and have the slightest belief they are doing so for the sake of honor is beyond comprehension.
